Top 7 Tips to Reduce iPad Hotspot Data Usage

Monitor Data & Network Usage on a Mac

Use a free desktop based bandwidth monitor like SurplusMeter, it sits in your Mac menu bar and keeps an eye on data use for you. Use this in combination with watching data usage directly on the iOS device for best results, as there may be some discrepancies and it’s always better to err on the side of caution with Personal Hotspot to avoid an overage fee.

Monitor Data Usage on iPhone or iPad

The first thing you’ll want to do is keep an eye on how much data you’re using. The easiest way to do this is directly on the iOS device that is sharing it’s internet connection through Personal Hotspot:

Open Settings and tap on “General”- tap on “Usage”-Scroll down and tap on “Cellular Usage”-“Cellular Network Data”-tap on “Reset Statistics”.

Disable Mac OS X Software Update Automatic Downloads

Open System Preferences and click on “Software Update”

Uncheck the box next to “Download updates automatically”

You can also go a step further and disable the scheduled update checks completely at the same option screen.

Turn Off iCloud and Dropbox Syncing

Temporarily disable cloud syncing apps like Dropbox and iCloud, or else they will continue syncing changes to their respective servers, slowly whittling away your allocated cellular data plan. You can pause syncing from Dropbox by pulling down the Dropbox menu and selection the “Pause Syncing” option, and to turn off iCloud syncing features:

Listen to Music from Local iTunes Library Rather than Pandora, Spotify, or Streaming Services

Avoid streaming music services while using Wi-Fi Hotspot and instead listen to your local iTunes music library. If you have a MacBook Air with limited disk space and don’t have much of a music library on there, just connect your iPhone to the Mac and play music from that through iTunes instead. Streaming audio is a bandwidth hog, avoid it as much as you can.

Disable Chrome and Firefox Automatic Updates

Chrome and Firefox release updates often and both apps will automatically download and update themselves in the background. While convenient on a regular internet connection, these can blow 20MB to 100MB of data easily, disable those automatic app updates for your web browser and you will certainly save some bandwidth.

Quit or Disable Desktop Apps with Push Notifications

OS X Mail checks for emails constantly in the background, quit it when the app isn’t in use. Mac OS X Menubar apps like Gmail Notifier and Facebook Notifier ping their servers constantly to look for updates. Quit these apps while using the iOS Hotspot. If it’s getting updates and it’s not 100% necessary for the work at hand, quit the app or at least disable or delay the updating to consume less data.

Convert Blu-Ray to AVI Free

What is AVI?

Audio Video Interleave (also Audio Video Interleaved), known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, although these features are seldom used. Most AVI files also use the file format extensions developed by the Matrox OpenDML group in February 1996. These files are supported by Microsoft, and are unofficially called “AVI 2.0”.

Generally speaking, comparing to hd dvds, blu-ray discs are more expensive, but hold more data.

HD DVD Storage Capacity – Pre-recorded playback material (HD-DVD-ROM): Single-layer (15GB) – Dual-layer (30GB)

Flash Say Goodbye to Android

ADOBE has ceased allowing Flash to be downloaded and installed to Android devices, effectively bringing to an end its reign on mobile devices.

Finally, the time has come. Yesterday, Adobe announced that it is forbid to download and install Flash on Android devices, which means Adobe gave up 85% of its mobile market share. Let’s say goodbye to Flash on mobile, officially.

The phasing out of Flash means that over time, Android devices will become blind to Flash content displayed on websites, such as Flash video, advertising, and Flash based navigation. Flash will be unsupported once Android phones and tablets upgrade to Google Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.

Jobs cited the proprietary nature of Flash, the availability of the more modern H264 video format, HTML5, reliability, security, performance, battery life, and its lack of support for touch screen devices as reasons why Flash would not be available on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

The move is vindication of the position taken in 2010 by former Apple CEO, the late Steve Jobs, that Flash was not suited to mobile devices.

The current Android operating system version Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) is the last that Flash will support and the Adobe Flash app will cease to be officially available for download from August 15 (US time) this year.

Adobe announced its intention to abandon Flash on mobile devices in favor of HTML 5 in November last year.

“We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook,” the blog post last year said.

“We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.

“We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations,” it said.

“Over the past two years, we’ve delivered Flash Player for mobile browsers and brought the full expressiveness of the web to many mobile devices,” Adobe said.

“However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.

“Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th.”

“Beginning August 15th we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed,” Adobe said in a statement.

“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.

Now, if you convert the SWF to MP4 Mac with SWF to MP4 for Mac converter, you can import the flash video to android.

Top 10 New Movies for Christmas 2012

Seven Psychopaths – stars Colin Farell who found himself involved in shih-tzu ‘dognapping’. Here he gets to meet a lot of unstable characters.

Great Expectations – base from the classic novel of Charles Dickens, the movie is one of the season movie releases and is expecting some great screen success.

Django Unchained – a film by Quentin Tarantino starring Jamie Foxx as the main character Django. Django is a slave who is an unlikely companion of a bounty hunter.

Life of PI – a movie about survival. The main character Pi Patel, a zookeeper son, fight to keep his entourage alive in a single boat in the middle of the ocean. It would have been easier if his companions are humans – but no, he has to keep assorted animals live (himself too) for him to tell a tale.

The Merry Graingers – is for a more fun and relaxing family afternoon movie marathon. This is a comedy film revolving around a family spending Christmas together. It shouldn’t be a strange setup only that they haven’t seen each other for seven years due to misunderstandings.

Rise of the Guardians – this is an ultimate kiddie Christmas movie. The villains expectedly creating havoc in a joyous season and the guardians, including St. Nick, raise arms to prevent chaos from reigning all over the earth.

Home Alone 5: The Holiday Heist – this can be considered now as a classic fun family movie for Christmas. And although this might not be as good as the original film, its lead star Christian Martyn is cute enough to make the movie fun to watch.

Jack Reacher – another Tom Cruise movie with the hopes of reaching the success of his last year’s movie. This one is about a military man set to capture a deadly gunman who killed 5 innocent people in a seemingly random shooting case.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – set in a time before Lord of the Rings, the young Bilbo Baggins (younger than when he was in Lord of the Rings) who set out with Dwarves on a journey (very unhobbit-like practice) to reclaim Erebor, the lost Kingdom of Dwarves.

The most wonderful time – a movie about family and Christmas chaos.

How To-MKV Files?

The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file.

It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar in concept to other containers like AVI, MP4, or Advanced Systems Format (ASF), but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software. Matroska file extensions are .MKV for video (with subtitles and audio), .MK3D for stereoscopic video, .MKA for audio-only files, and .MKS for subtitles only.

MKV files are video files which are similar to AVI and MOV formats and supports several different types of audio and video codecs. The MKV file format is an acronym for Matroska Video File. If you have recently downloaded a MKV file, you might not be able to open it with Windows Media Player. However, there are several other free video players which will allow you to watch movies that have an MKV extension.

In order to watch videos with the .MKV file extension, you should download the VLC player or DivX Player. You can download the above players from the following links:

VLC Player –videolanDOTorg/vlc/

DivX Player –divxDOTcom/

Once you have downloaded and installed the software, you can then just double click on the MKV file and open it or use the “File -> Open” dialog provided by these players to browse and open your MKV file.

A range of software has native Matroska support. Those include media players such as Zoom Player, PotPlayer, MPlayer, VLC, GOM Player, ALLPlayer, Elmedia Player, foobar2000 and PowerDVD and media centers such as Plex, Boxee, PS3 Media Server and XBMC, and the web browser Google Chrome. A number of software tools such as HandBrake and Pinnacle Studio also support Matroska.
